Mobile Medical Units

A guide to your Occupational Health appointment

Group of OHTs

Our modern fleet of Mobile Medical Units (MMU) is one of the largest in the UK. They bring comprehensive clinic facilities and trained staff directly to the workplace. Each MMU is driven and staffed by a trained Occupational Health Technician (OHT) who provides routine health surveillance, health assessment and fit-for-work assessments to a geographically dispersed workforce or to employers who have limited resources on site, minimising travel and downtime of the workforce.

The health assessments conducted are based upon risk mitigation information that has been supplied to us by your employer. These assessments are run as part of a periodic programme and ensure any ill health is picked up at an early stage, or that you are fit to carry out your role.

Preparing for your health surveillance or fit-for-work appointment

Your health surveillance/fit-for-work assessment appointment will take between 20 and 60 minutes depending upon the assessments required. You are advised not eat two hours prior to your appointment, particularly if you know that blood glucose monitoring will be carried out.

Our MMUs do not have facilities to store your property, such as bags and coats, securely, so please store such items in a safe place before attending your appointment. Where possible, please remove outdoor clothing or soiled workwear before entering the MMU.

Signage will be positioned at the entrance to the MMU – please knock the door before entering the MMU as other assessments may still be on going.

Where possible, please bring to your appointment a list of any medications that you take.

What to expect when attending your appointment

Your appointment will be conducted by an OHT who will work from an MMU.

At the beginning of the appointment the OHT will ask you a few questions to confirm your identity, before taking the time to explain and fully brief you on the nature of your assessment(s) and answer any questions you may have. If you decline any of the assessments, this will be noted on our system and your line manager will be notified.

Following your assessment(s), an outcome report will be generated which may contain recommendations or information regarding onward referral, if appropriate. If the results of the assessment(s) indicate that an appointment with an Occupational Health Advisor or Occupational Health Physician are required, the OHT will inform you at the end of your appointment.

Mobile Medical Unit (MMU)

The MMU is a purpose-built mobile clinic space. The MMU is equipped with all the necessary equipment for our OHTs to conduct a clinic including an audio booth.

Each MMU is driven and maintained by the OHT, who conducts your visit, and will be cleaned in between appointments.

The video found here: vimeo.com/302869854 provides an overview of the MMU (password mmushowcase1).

Occupational Health Technicians

Our OHTs have been trained to conduct your assessments according to our Clinical Assessment Pathways, and their competence is assessed at the end of their training period and throughout their career via clinical audits.

OHTs work to a strict set of criteria, and if assessment outcomes indicate that further assessments, or a review by an Occupational Health Practitioner is required, they will escalate your case via our triage pathway. All of our OHTs have direct access to Occupational Health Advisors and Physicians and can seek further advice should it be required. OHTs may provide general health and lifestyle advice based on the outcome of your assessments.

OHTs will not conduct any assessments that are outside of those lists in section 4.i and 4.ii.

Each of our OHTs is issued with a unique QR code that upon scanning, will take you to a short survey which you can complete, online, at your own convenience. The survey is your opportunity to provide feedback on the service you have received and raise any issues you may have encountered. Questionnaire responses are reviewed frequently and used to improve our performance.

You can also email any feedback to MCS1@healthpartners.uk.com.

Outcome Certificates

At the end of your appointment, the OHT will generate a ‘Fitness Certificate’ which will be issued to your employer via the Gateway portal. The OHT may document any recommendations on this certificate, such as an increased use of PPE or any other recommended adjustments.

If the OHT has escalated any of your assessment outcomes to an OHA/OHP, this will be documented on the ‘Fitness Certificate’. You will be contacted by one of our administration teams to arrange a telephone appointment with an OHA/OHP.

FAQs

Will my manager see the results of my assessments?

Your manager will not see the detailed results of your assessment. Following the MMU visit to your workplace, your line manager will receive a certificate stating whether you have passed the assessment and any suggested adjustments, or if you have been escalated for review by an OHA/OHP.

Is the Technician a Nurse or Doctor?

The OHT carrying out your assessments is not a trained Nurse or Doctor but is trained to a high standard against our clinical pathways and assessed as competent to carry out the assessments. Should further medical advice be required at the time of your appointment, the OHT has access to Occupational Health Advisors and Occupational Health Physicians who will advise them on next steps or will review your case following escalation. OHTs are routinely audited to ensure on-going competence.

Who decides on which assessments I need?

Your employer will advise us on the nature of your role and the workplace exposures for which you require surveillance. Should your role and/or exposures change, your employer must inform us so we can ensure the correct assessments are conducted.

Who will book my appointment?

Your appointment will be booked by your line manager or other appointed person within your organisation.

What happens if I refuse to have an assessment?

If you refuse to complete an assessment, the OHT will document this on our system and on your outcome certificate. Although no assessments can be conducted without your consent, please note that some assessments may be conditional to your employment.

How can I provide feedback on my appointment?

Your OHT will have a unique QR code that you can scan – this will take you directly to a questionnaire which you can anonymously complete. Alternatively, you can email any questions or feedback to MCS1@Healthpartners.uk.com.
